Book publication in 2025
Modern America - Travelling east to west, a journey across the USA over a five week period, beginning in Chicago and finishing in Los Angeles. Most of the journey followed the famous Route 66, the mother route. Some detours were taken, as Angela and I talked to people who pointed us in the direction of interest away from Route 66. Angela filmed our journey, whilst I concentrated on the stills. The book will be published during 2025 by www.2books.com, by publishing imprint. Keep an eye for details. |

Book publication in 2025
'LAST MAN TURN THE LIGHTS OFF' Kellingley Colliery, affectionately known as the Big K was the last deep coal mine to close in the United Kingdom on 15 December 2015. I was commissioned by a television company to document the last six weeks before its closure. My orginal hard cover book, Last Days at Big K, sold out within three weeks! As the tenth anniversary approaches, I'm working on a new book, illustrating the images in the orginal book, plus additional photos that did not make the final cut in the original publication. Exhibition plans are in progress to launch the new publication up north! My time photographing at the Big K was one of the highlights of my career. I got on so well with the miners and their families. I've kept in touch with many of the former Kellingley miners on social media. I can't wait to meet up with them again for the tenth anniversary since the closure of the pit. |
THIS RIVER (ongoing project)
Book publication, late 2025, early 2026 I'm working on a project close to my home in the Swansea Valley, south Wales. The River Tawe runs from its source in the Black Mountains, to the mouth in the second city of Wales, Swansea. I believe the distance is some 28 miles. As well as the interesting landscape, people living near the Tawe form the backbone of this photographic study. Although I love travel assignments, it is also important to capture life near to home. I will never forget that my photographic career began documenting mining communities in the valleys back in the 1980s. I live in a small village, just outside the small town of Ystradgynlais. The River Tawe runs around a small peninsula called Ynys Uchaf. I've lived there with my wife for the past thirty four years. During my full time job as a lecturer in photogrpahy and media, I travelled each day down to Swansea. The road ran alongside the Tawe in many parts of the journey. |
Pleased to have my work featured in this fantastic publication, available in both soft and hardback versions. My work is placed amongst 16 other well known documentary photographers.
Early work from images of my native south Wales valleys is featured, capturing pre 1984/85 miners' strike and later in the book, some photographs from a BBC TV commission to capture the last six weeks before closure of Kellingley Colliery in north Yorkshire, 2015. The Big K was the last deep mine to close in the United Kingdom. |
