Durham Miners' Gala, 2016
I first photographed a miners' gala in Cardiff during 1983. It was the last one before the year-long miners' strike and the last ever gala to take place in the capital city of Wales. The only gala that remains is in Durham, situated in the north of England. I always wanted to go, but never found the time! In 2015, I photographed the last days of deep coal mining in the UK at Killingley Colliery, north Yorkshire. Some of the miners from the Big K, made an annual pilgrimage to the Durham Miners Gala. It was fitting that they would be there and a great ending to my book 'Last Days at Big K'. Warning : all photographs are strictly copyright Roger Tiley. Illegal use without permission can be tracked by an ID number. An invoice will be issued. |
