The beginning 1978-82
Forty years on and I'm looking at the photos from the beginning of my professional career with some happy and also sad memories. Photography has allowed me to meet people and do things that I would never have done, unless I had a camera in my hands. The pleasure is always learning new things and trying new approaches; capturing new subjects has always been the magic. The photographs do the talking and I don't know any big words to back up my practice! I've always wanted to take photos for everyone to enjoy, or at least learn from. Over the years I've learned to work in difficult surroundings. I've always been nervous working on assignments and still am! It's not about producing pretty pictures on a Sunday afternoon and coming up with a trendy title for a body of work; it's about satisfying the client; but more importantly, adding a style and an individual approach. That's why a professional photographer/film maker is commissioned in the first place! Photography and the media in general has changed considerably over the past forty odd years. Everyone is a photographer these days! In saying that, getting work in the early 80s was as difficult as it is today. Endless visits to picture editors, talking to television companies and making a name entailed many sleepless nights! The secret I believe, is going with the times and using new media to promote work. It's a different world now! Warning : all photographs are strictly copyright Roger Tiley. Illegal use without permission can be tracked by an ID number. An invoice will be issued. |
